THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WORLD WRITING SYSTEMS
The National Museum of World Writing Systems opened in June 2023 in Songdo, Incheon after ten years of preparation.
The National Museum of World Writing Systems is the world’s third institution,
following the Champollion Museum and the National Museum of Chinese Writing,
dedicated to exploring the history of writing systems, one of humanity’s greatest inventions.
Through various exhibitions, research, and educational programs,
the National Museum of World Writing Systems aspires
to become an embodiment of the history of time
and space—from humanity’s first invention of writing systems
to the present and future.
It is my belief that the most precious writing systems were created not just by a need for letters and numbers,
but out of our most human feelings: love, compassion, and desire for happiness. For these emotions to mold into systems of writing, it took great time and patience.
Rather than simply listing and displaying artifacts, the National Museum of World Writing Systems hopes to share this breath of human history and beauty in writing systems with our visitors.
The National Museum of World Writing Systems will become a hub for the world writing systems where people can encounter various writing systems and cultures
from around the world. We will continue to open exhibitions tailored to the needs of our time by engaging with the world's writing systems and civilizations from a comparative cultural perspective.
The National Museum of World Writing Systems will strive to become a place where the spirit of the generation is captured through culture and art.
